MAJOR HEALTH OBSTACLES
There are some major reasons why people wait until the last minute to address their health. If we know what these reasons are, we can then apply strategies to ensure health becomes a simple priority.
- Procrastination: The words “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “Ill get it done later” are some of the most poisonous words we can use. It pushes our priorities off, and increases anxiety because the “to do” list will only grow. Remember action curbs anxiety. Stop procrastinating and make a commitment
- Our health is free: Have you ever noticed when somebody receives something for free, we value it less? Our health is given to us for free, and so its easy to take for granted. This is also why when people have severe health crisis, you’ll notice they most often take it extremely seriously. Why? Because they now know what its like to lose it, and stop taking it for granted. Don’t let the fact you get your health for free stop you from taking care of it, because remember, it is your number 1 asset.
- Convenience: Lets be honest, one of the major reasons fast food restaurants have become so popular has much less to do with the food, but more to do with the ease of use, or convenience. In todays world, there is never enough time, and its difficult to steam vegetables, or cook eggs for breakfast. But it is easy to pour a bowl of cheerios or toast pop tarts. Its also difficult to spend 1 hour at the gym and fit it into our busy schedules. . .
- Convenience continued. . .
Convenience is critical, but remember you can also find creative ways to eat healthy and exercise without losing the convenience. An example would be to cook all of your health meals on sunday so when the week comes, you don’t have to go out to eat, and you’ve already made your meals. Or in the morning to spend even 15 minutes exercising while you listen to an audio book or perform other tasks. Simple changes can be done to create change, you just need to be creative.
- Lack of a goal/vision: People always do better when they have a “why” for something. If you were told to run 50 miles for $10, most people wouldn’t do it. But if you were told you had to run 50 miles to save your child’s life, then you would get it done. The reasons why you do things are more important than how you do them. Have a clear goal and vision of what you want to achieve, and it will become attainable, and you are much more likely to follow through with your health.
- Environment: What and who we surround ourselves with plays a critical role in our health and well being. Picture yourself surrounded at work and home by smokers. Do you think you would run a higher risk of becoming a smoker? Of course! And not only that, but even if you don’t smoke, it STILL affects you negatively. So you need to surround yourself with people that have similar goals to you. . .
Environment continued. . .
You have to join the crowd that can help propel you to where you want to be. Environment also includes your physical surroundings. If your trying to lose 50 lbs in 5 months, but your house is full of candy, soda, and muffins, do you increase or decrease your odds of hitting that goal? Exactly, so you need to surround yourself with an environment that supports your health goals and vision.
