SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine develops a sideways curve, usually a C curve or an S curve.  It is a three dimensional condition, meaning it can affect all three planes of spinal structure. It normally also is accommodated by a certain amount of rotation within the spine.
• The majority of Scoliosis cases are Idiopathic (Unknown cause), early detection is key.
• Scoliosis is diagnosed when the curve is 10 or more degrees.

What to Look For

Uneven musculature from side to side (bulging of muscle tissue)

Thoracic curves may present a rib “hump”, where the rib cage will protrude farther on one side vs. the other.

Uneven hips, shoulders, or possibly even a head tilt from side to side.

Adams test, have them bend forward, if you notice any bends, rib humps, or rotation it is a sign of scoliosis.

What Symptoms Can It Produce

  • Pain anywhere within the spine
  • Mild to Severe muscle spasms
  • In severe cases it can cause lung compromise (decreased lung capacity)
  • Difficulty with certain motions, or a loss of flexibility
  • Difficulty with standing up straight
  • Can cause the spine to degenerate at a very fast rate due to abnormal load bearing on the discs.
  • If severe, it can cause difficulty with breathing
  • The more severe the curvature becomes, generally the more prominent the abnormal posture will be

What to Do

  • Detecting Scoliosis Early is critical. 
  • Have X-rays taken and analyzed by a Chiropractor or Orthopedic Specialist to examine the severity of the curve and options for treatment.
  • Chiropractic care has shown to be helpful in keeping normal mechanics in the spine, but alone may not slow down or stop scoliosis.  
  • Bracing can be utilized for abnormal spinal curvatures to stop the scoliosis from worsening, and sometimes can even decrease the abnormal curvature.  Braces are generally used for curves between 20 and 50 degrees.
  • Surgery is used in severe cases, when lung and heart function is potentially compromised.  In these cases, a posterior spinal fusion is used with rods to reduce the scoliosis.
  • Exercises, specifically mirror image exercises may benefit mild scoliosis, but again, early detection and diagnosis is a key step to preventing progression.
