SACROILIAC JOINT PAIN

The sacroiliac joint is the junction between the sacrum or bottom bone of the spine, and the two major wing shaped hip bones, called the iliac bones.  They are also known as the SI joints. The left and right SI joints have only a small amount of movement, and are held together by some of the largest and strongest ligaments of the body. SI Joint Pain, dysfunction or inflammation is when there is abnormal wear and tear on the SI joint, or abnormal movement that leads to pain and discomfort.  

What Symptoms Can It Produce

  • Pain on the left or right side right at the belt line.
  • Difficulty with walking or bending movements.
  • Painful sitting
  • Diffuse lower back pain located around the base of the lower back.
  • Loss of Range of Motion
  • Joint Stiffness
  • It can cause radiating pain down the leg.
  • Walking and feeling “off Kilter”

What to Do

1.) See A Chiropractor:  Most cases of SI Joint dysfunction can be alleviated by restoring proper alignment and motion to the SI joint. The study listed below found that 72% of patients had pain relief with chiropractic care alone.

2. )  Anti-Inflammatory Diet-Reducing inflammation is key to preventing SI pain turning into a chronic condition, having an anti-inflammatory diet will prevent this.

3.)  Exercises:

  • Pelvic Tilt
  • Figure 4 stretch
  • Leg over side lying stretch
  • knee to chest
  • child’s pose

Avoid:

  • Crunches
  • Straight leg deadlifts
  • Using an “SI Belt” can help to stabilize the SI joints while your working towards correcting the problem.  The belt will hold the joints with more stability, just be sure it is not too tight and doesn’t restrict any blood flow.  Below is a great tutorial on how to use the SI belt.

  • Avoid sitting on your wallet or sitting on uneven surfaces.  This will lead to abnormal weight-bearing on the SI joints and can lead to worsening of the problem and discomfort.
