ARTHRITIS

Arthritis simply means inflammation in the joints.  It can affect a wide variety of joints, and can range from Mild to Severe.

What to Look For

  • The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis
  • This is due to wear and tear on joint spaces over time
  • Osteo-arthritis is more common as we age, however, can begin earlier if improper movement or abnormal wear and tear occurs on the joint
  • Healthy physical training and proper movement patterns are critical to help in the prevention of osteo-arthritis

What Symptoms can it Produce

Pain is the most debilitating symptom of arthritis

Loss of range of motion is common in joints with arthritis

Redness and swelling are less common, but may be seen in different types of arthritis such as Rhuematoid Arthritis

Stiff joints, and joints that are painful after exercise

What to Do

  • To treat arthritis, you’ll need to approach it from 2 angles
  • First, decrease the amount of inflammatory foods and toxins within the body.  Diets high in inflammatory substances are more likely to develop arthritis. Also using anti-inflammatory substances to help decrease inflammation within the body can allow the healing to occur more quickly
  • Second, make sure/restore proper movement and mechanics in your body.  This is where your Chiropractor or Physical Therapist or Athletic Trainer can assist you.  Whether its just normal daily tasks, or whether its athletics or weightlifting, you need normal mechanics to reduce the likelihood of developing arthritis.
  • Staying active is important.  If a certain activity seems to make it worse, stop that activity.  But try to find other things to stay active and healthy
  • Maintain a low/healthy weight
  • Take turmeric and Omega 3 fats-Both are anti-inflammatory 
  • Decrease sugars, omega 6 fats, and MSG
  • Adding foods that are higher in sulfur has also shown to have positive improvements by decreasing joint inflammation
