AC JOINT SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulder pain commonly comes from previous falls or injuries.  One common injury is when the acromion and clavicular joint have a separation and the ligaments are stretched and torn.  

• This is most commonly caused by a sudden trauma or injury. 

What to Look For

May have a clicking or popping of the shoulder joint with movement

Pain with lying on the involved side

Painful or loss of ROM

Your may notice a bump on the top of the shoulder.

What to Do

  • What to do depends on the type of AC joint injury and severity
  • If severe, and the ligaments are torn beyond a grade 2 strain (usually produces swelling/bruising)-may require surgery
  • Many can be corrected from therapy, adjusting, and strengthening exercises
  • It is critical to avoid collision sports or events, as this could significantly worsen the injury.  Again the most common way this joint is injured is by falling on the shoulder.
  • The tissue has to heal on its own, but proper strengthening and alignment can help speed up the process.
